LGBTQ+ Terminology

Androgynous: Identifying or presenting as neither masculine, nor feminine. 

Asexual: The lack of sexual attraction or desire towards other people.

Biological Sex: A term used to describe the sex assigned to you at birth based on biological characteristics such as chromosomes, hormones, and genitalia. 

Bisexual: A person emotionally, romantically, or sexually attracted to more than one gender. 

Cisgender: A term used to describe a person whose gender identity aligns with the sex they were assigned at birth (Biological Sex.)

Gay: A person emotionally, romantically or sexually attracted to members of the same gender.

Gender Expression: Outward expression of gender identity (e.g., behavior, clothing, haircut, voice) which may or may not conform to societal definitions of what is considered "masculine" or "feminine."

Gender Identity: One’s internal concept of self as male, female, a blend of both or neither; how individuals view themselves and what they call themselves. One's gender identity can be the same or different from their sex assigned at birth.

Gender-fluid: A term used to describe a person whose gender identity is not fixed to one gender and instead is fluid between two or more genders.

Gender-nonconforming: A term used to describe people who do not conform to traditional expectations of gender, or whose gender expression is not binary.

Intersex: An umbrella term used to describe a person who is born with a mix of biological characteristics such as genitalia or chromosomes. 

Lesbian: A woman emotionally, romantically, or sexually attracted to members of the same gender. 

Pansexual: A term used to describe a person who is not limited by gender, gender identity, or biological sex in terms of their sexual, emotional, or romantic attraction.

Queer: A self-affirming umbrella term used to describe fluid identities and orientations.

Questioning: A term used for people who are exploring their sexual orientation or gender identity. 

Transgender: An umbrella term for people whose gender identity does not align with the sex they were assigned at birth and/or cultural gender norms.

Suicide Prevention

LGBTQ+ people are more likely to experience suicidal thoughts, or attempt suicide, than heterosexual & cisgender people. This is especially prevalent with LGBTQ+ youth. Learn more about Fern Lily Designs' dedication to raising awareness about suicide prevention.
